Curtains and shades

Stunning Scarlet
One of the most famous scenes from Gone With the Wind is when Scarlet rips down the sumptuous velvet curtains and repurposes them into a fantastic gown.

There is actually a cinematic precedent. Besides Scarlet, we have Maria ripping down the curtains in her room to make rompers for the VonTrapp children.

Glamours Giselle
We also have the birds and mice using the curtains to make ball gowns for the heroines of both Disney's Cinderella and later on in Disney's slightly self-deprecating but absolutely adorable Enchanted.

So the curtains-to-clothes is an actual fashion legacy must.

So I am proud to tell you that I've done that.

Well, actually it was a black valance and I used it as an improvised head scarf when my hair was being uncooperative, but I worked it just as fantastically.

Oddly enough my current window treatments are actually lovely black and whiete floral print scarves from Target's discontinued Liberty of London Line.

In my world this becomes that and vice-versa.

Things don't have to be worn as intended. Be versatile. With a little imagination you can create a unique fashion statement.

Speaking of scarlet. I want to take a moment to rave over the most perfect red lipstick ever. Cover Girl's Superstay red 743.

It is a bright matte red that true to the label lasts. It will not budge. I have had dental work done in this lipstick and it has not gone anywhere.

And they don't make it anymore. It has been "reformulated" with an inferior quality lipstick that despite the claims on the label of being able to hold up for 24 hours, will not make it through the day. The closest red I could find to the perfect scarlet was a red frosty color.

Red frosty. It nearly pains me to even type that. They call it "All Day Cherry".I call it "Not Good Enough".

I want my pin-up pucker back.

You would think that between all the spying on me that is done via my shopper's cards and online purchases, these companies would be able to give a girl a heads up so she can horde her beloved shades if they decide to stop making them.

So as I can afford it, I have been on a quest to find a perfect scarlet that will not move. When I do, I am going to buy a thousand tubes of it so I won't have this cruel trick played on me again.

I would also like to find some birds and mice that know how to sew because that would just be awesome!

Page is the Rage!

In an era where the Playmate was considered the ideal beauty, Bettie Page gave us a different opinion. She went for dominate instead of demure and kicked society’s views in the ass. Although sometimes shocking, her work is not raunchy or tasteless. She exudes sex appeal while remaining playful and unique. Even her most risqué poses have a bit of a wink to them. In her infamous bondage photographs, she makes almost comically playful faces and gestures. She was much more than a pin up model; she was a performer who played two characters equally well: The Virgin and The Vixen.

To channel my inner Bettie Page I usually pair a cute dress with sexy thigh high stockings. If I am feeling really daring, I add in some visible garters for a little more sass. The important thing to remember is to keep a good balance between modesty and sex appeal. You have to have the right attitude to pull it off. The line between sexy and trashy can sometimes be thin, but if you present yourself in a respectable manner you can get away with almost anything. Confidence is the sexiest thing you can have in your closet ladies!

Where do you get your inspiration?

I

This dress was an amazing Goodwill find. I spent around $5 on it and it stil had the store tags from Express pricing it at $55. My shopping-fu is strong.

I started out planing on wearing a pair of Tstrap pumps with this dress. But I have been listening to Hell on Heels by The Pistol Annies far too much so the boots were an unavoidable thing.

Songs often put me in the mood to dress in a particular way or to wear a particular item of clothing. My playlist is almost an accessory itself.

The fantastic "Golden Age"

I love the hodg-podge of fashion in the video to this highly infectious song that captures the very essence of what this blog is all about.

I wished I lived in the golden age
Giving it up on the Broadway stage
Hang with the rats and smoke cigars
Have a break with Frank and count the stars

The "Golden age". Once people used to take pride in their appearance. Now, it seems as if a fashion apathy has gripped the entire world. In a place where shows such as Project Runway are shown worldwide, so many are content to throw on pajama pants or sweats and leave it at that. Or if the day calls for a fancier level of dress, fifty dollar sweat pants with rhinestones glued to the butt are the go-to fashion choice.

Once we looked beautiful, our time has exchanged that for the pathetic privilege of being walking billboard adverts for overpriced mass market fashion houses.

I know when I put on something nice, I instantly feel better about myself. It raises the bar of my entire day.

Give it a try, shake off the fashion apathy and dress to the level of fantastic you demand from your day.
